SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS

Review by Scott Weinberg

“The simple truth is that Ritchie’s films are a manic lark, slight homages to the true Holmes that have been reformed and retrofitted into something resembling Victorian-era Michael Bay films. That the combination of Holmes’  universe and raucous displays of incongruous mayhem work so well is a testament to Ritchie’s sense of humor, the screenplay’s fast pace, and (of course) the endlessly amusing chemistry between Downey and Law.”

CARNAGE

Review by Peter Martin

“Polanski directs without calling undue attention to how the film is staged, but it really is a marvel of construction, utilizing a great variety of angles and composition, pulling one character or another into the foreground and then gently pushing the others around the apartment.”

“Polanski brings it all home with verve and craftmanship, and the running time simply evaporates. It’s all very funny, infused with genuine wit, and filmed with sufficient style to keep any devoted cinephile happy”

TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY

Review by Jason Gorber

“TINKER is a penetrating work, cerebral and deliberate. Its narrative is one of breadth and complexity, yet the plot is secondary to the astonishing way the film conveys perception, a movie more about the investigation than the result of the chase.”

“Oldman is at the top of his game, a presence akin to Olivier at his finest without the staginess that sometimes crept in to Sir Larry’s form. With the crinkle of his nose or the focusing of the eye he manages to guide the film with grace and subtlety, as if the thread of the story is gliding upon ice, jostled gently by the perspicacity of the man.”

THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO

Review by Ryland Aldrich

“At Dragon Tattoo‘s heart is a whodunnit mystery. The problem here is that screenwriter Steven Zaillian refuses to tell the story that way. The audience is kept at too far a distance from the details of the mystery. Instead, we are forced to be content watching our dual protagonists piece together the case, never fully privy to what the evidence represents. ”

“While not without its story problems, Fincher’s take on the material is another deftly executed package, loaded with tantalizing sights and sounds.”

YOUNG ADULT

Review by Peter Martin

“Cody’s script lays everything out in a calm, natural, everyday manner. Her characters talk as we would expect people in those specific situations to talk, without artifice or the excess of smart-aleck, self-conscious slang that marred Juno. ”

“With the cast delivering spot-on performances and Reitman’s direction capturing the spirit of the story and the characters, Young Adult works extremely well as a snapshot of a woman on the verge of a breakdown — or a breakthrough, if everything goes just right for Mavis.”
